"I supported this objection for a number of reasons. Firstly, I have concerns with the implementing decision by the Commission as it is may not be compatible with Union law, while there are concerns over the EFSA risk management procedure. More specifically, the achieved genetic modification of the maize seed can lead to a resistance to glyphosate. The Commission bases its argument for authorisation on the concept of a level of ‘acceptable local mortality’ of non-target lepidopteran species (butterflies and moths) which is considered by some to be a flawed interpretation of EFSA advice. In addition, there is the possibility of cross-contamination with an ancient maize variety that carries major risks for farmers and the environment. For all of the above reasons I voted in favour of the objection, plus the fact that I do not support the introduction of GMOs into the European Union."@en1
