"Madam President, food contact materials which are used in everyday life in the form of food packaging can be made from a variety of materials such as plastics, rubber, paper or metal, and may transfer their constituents to food, thus endangering human health. Consumer health protection is fundamental, so it is important to ensure that any potential transfer to foodstuffs of chemicals that can contaminate or alter the composition of food in a detrimental way is prevented. Currently, food contact materials are subject to legally binding requirements at EU level. To date, specific measures have been adopted for plastics, ceramics, regenerated cellulose and active intelligent materials, and now the rapporteur calls on the Commission to produce specific EU measures for all kinds of food contact material. There is no doubt that the safety of food contact materials must be seriously evaluated, as chemicals can easily migrate from the material into the food. However, Member States should be free to adopt specific measures at national level for all kinds of food contact material so that these can be manufactured in compliance with good manufacturing practices."@en1
