"Madam President, I say to the Commissioner: I have watched you in this place, many times, often saying some quite uncomplimentary things about those of us on this side of the House. But today I am going to say something that I will probably never say to you again. I think you are right; transparency is absolutely vital. Frankly, this should have been done a long time ago. I was thinking earlier that I do not even remember the European Parliament discussing this before and it turns out that Parliament’s resolution on this was two and a half years ago, before I was even elected as an MEP. So it certainly is something that has taken a long time coming. Transparency, of course, is something that should apply to all institutions, whether in the European Union or elsewhere. I am disappointed at what I am hearing with regard to the Council. The fact that there are more lobbyists on the register here than in the United States, as you said earlier, should not necessarily be a source of pride because actually so much lobbying leads to big-business lobbying, which leads to legislation that suits big business. We need to make sure that legislation that comes in, wherever it comes in, is legislation which suits SMEs and does not give big business a competitive advantage over the small businesses that should be the engine room of the economy."@en1
