"Madam President, Turkey’s intervention in this increasingly complicated war is at the same time both welcome and dangerous and not all as it seems. Kobanî became a recognised symbol of resistance, with brave Kurdish forces drawing a line and pushing Islamic states away from the Turkish border, thus creating a zone of relative safety. As we know, their endeavours were repaid with Turkish bombing raids and armoured convoys. Now we have a key ally fighting Western—backed Kurdish groups and moderate opposition militias using the fight against Islamic State as a smokescreen to spread its military campaign against the Kurds into Syria. Then there are the traditional Russian and Middle Eastern foreign policy interests to consider. Peace cannot be secured and the inhumane actions dealt with until this illogical web of alliances is properly untangled for the benefit of humanity as a whole. The longer we take, the more the Syrian people suffer."@en1
