"Madam President, after a decade of economic cruelty and an austerity-driven recession driven by the European Central Bank, the EU Commission, the IMF and, of course, the hands of the government in Greece, Syriza; after a decade which has seen youth unemployment rates consistently at 50%, a decade where 45% of Greek pensioners live below the poverty line of EUR 655 a month, a decade of the highest levels of suicide known in the Western world, a decade in which we have seen all the assets of Greece handed over, we who had said to Greece that we have seen this tragedy, have recognised that this was a battle to the death between those who wanted to save the euro, and the dignity and the lives of the Greek people. They wanted to save the EU Commissioners’ salaries, rather than the lives of the European people. That is why we said the euro was not more important than ordinary citizens’ lives. Greece should have left the euro. You know it over there, and you failed in your job to protect them."@en1
