"Mr President, yesterday the British Prime Minister announced her intention formally to trigger Article 50 by the end of March 2017. Politically, socially and economically, Brexit has enormous consequences for the island of Ireland. It is said that Ireland is the country that will be most affected by Brexit. We export 50% of our beef, 60% of cheese and 85% of our agricultural products to the UK. But the most important issue I want to comment on tonight is the peace process. A lot of time, effort and energy has been invested, with the help of the European Union, in ensuring that there is peace on the island of Ireland. Communities live together side by side, there are no divisions, there is free movement of people across the border. We have agencies such as Tourism Ireland and InterTrade Ireland working on an all-Ireland basis, promoting the island of Ireland and activities on the island of Ireland. We do not want to see that border reinstated. We want to ensure that the implications of such a border are recognised: that there could be a negative influence on the peace process, which has been supported by the European Union. I would ask this House, and everybody here, to bear in mind the peace process and the border in Ireland. We do not want to see that border reinstated, and it behoves everybody to pay due attention to that issue."@en1
