"I was pleased to support this report which is a well balanced and comprehensive assessment of the challenges we face in ensuring equal treatment in employment and protection from discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, disability, age, religion and belief or sexual orientation. While great progress has been made since the Directive’s introduction, discrimination is still a problem for our society. According to data from the EU Fundamental Rights Agency, 40% of Roma job seekers experience discrimination, 75% of gay people will not hold hands in public with their partner, 38% of Jewish respondents admitted they do not wear their symbolic garments in public and 37% of Muslim respondents have reported experiencing discrimination. The report highlights the importance of collecting data, in order to help prove the existence of discrimination and in particular indirect discrimination. Awareness raising and access to information, with the help of equality bodies and social partners, is crucial as many victims themselves still have difficulty in recognising discrimination. Access to justice in discrimination cases is also a key area highlighted in the report."@en1
