"Madam President, you might very well think, from looking at the title of this debate, that I’d be all in favour of this report. After all, it is about making sure that those who have come to countries of the European Union illegally are not then able to stay here. At first glance, it’s about the rule of law, and I can see exactly what this is intended to achieve. You might also very well think that I would oppose it, because – as ever with the European Union – the aims are about harmonisation: about one—size—fits—all legislation at EU level. And I’m not convinced, frankly, that that will provide anything more than cosmetics or actually result in a real difference being made. It is not going to overturn the decisions which have been made which lead to even more illegal immigration. But in actual fact, I’m going to abstain on this regulation, because the decision is one which isn’t actually going to apply to the United Kingdom. Sovereignty cuts both ways: I back Brexit in the UK because I don’t want laws in the UK to be made by the European Union, and so I take the view that it would be utterly hypocritical of me if I were to interfere in decisions like this, which will not affect me or the United Kingdom. It is therefore appropriate for me to abstain on this resolution."@en1
