"Madam President, I may be one of the lone voices here taking issue with the Commission's proposals, but I do so in the name of Ireland, and also with the support of the government, backed up by the Irish Parliament, which voted 93 votes to 36 to appeal this to the European Court. A decision which our GUE Sinn Féin representative described as ‘morally wrong’. Well, if it is morally wrong to defend the reputation of a country, what is morally right? We have been accused of illegal state aid, which we deny; Apple did not get a sweetheart deal. We also take issue with the use of competition law to undermine the sovereignty of a national state. In this instance, taxation is the competence of the Member States, and if the sovereignty of other Member States was challenged, I think some speakers here would be taking a different line to what they have taken so far. We agree, of course, there are gaping loopholes in relation to tax law and these have to be closed, and are being closed, and we have been at the forefront in that regard, in OECD and on BEPS. There is also of course envy that we have been so successful in attracting foreign direct investment to Ireland. But I can tell you this: if these companies leave Ireland they will not be going to Paris, they will not be going to Berlin, they will not be going anywhere else except Singapore and other places outside the European Union. We have an educated workforce, we have a great relationship with the United States, which no other country has, we are also a gateway to Europe – and that is why we have foreign direct investment. Finally, I want to leave you with three points: we are not going to be the messenger boys for the European Union, gathering taxes which they say belong to other Member States. We are not going to be the punchbag for this European Commission when it is afraid to tackle the big states regarding the Stability and Growth Pact. Finally, we will see you in court, after which you will hopefully be eating humble pie, perhaps humble apple pie."@en1
