"Madam President, I support the principle of tax justice, so on that, I agree with the Commissioner. But the question we ask today is: can EU state aid rules influence or even determine the tax policy of sovereign Member States? I do not know the answer to that question, and, crucially, I do not know the implications of a positive answer. That is why we need clarity, and the European Court of Justice (ECJ) is the only institution to provide that clarity. A EUR 13 billion bauble has been dangled in front of Irish noses. Commissioner Moscovici said, ‘it is strange for the Irish to say “I do not want your EUR 13 billion” when they could have social programmes’. So, Commissioner, can you guarantee the EUR 13 billion to Ireland if the ECJ agrees with you? Or will other countries look for their share of that particular cake? Commissioner Moscovici has basically guaranteed that we can start drawing up plans for schools and hospitals and houses; many Irish politicians already have. Can you guarantee that, Commissioner?"@en1
