"Madam President, following the collapse of the peace talks with the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) last year, the attempted coup earlier this summer and the continued ISIS/Daesh attacks on Turkish soil, there are genuine internal security threats that Turkey does have the right to counter. This right cannot equate, however, with enabling President Erdogan and the AK party to have carte blanche to detain, arrest and remove from office all political opponents at will, under the pretence of fighting terror. Neither can it justify disproportionate military force against the Kurdish civilian population in the south east. As we now see tens of thousands removed from their posts in the army, the judiciary, the civil service, academia and private media outlets, with little due process, such an approach – solely on the basis that they are old Gülenists and terrorists – is very difficult to justify. Commissioner Hahn has even hinted that there is evidence of pre-prepared lists being used in preparing purges following the coup attempt. As we now watch with renewed hope – if not total confidence – in the emerging ceasefire in Syria, I am minded to comment on the recent efforts by Turkey to support the Free Syrian Army in liberating parts of the Turkish-Syrian border areas from ISIS/Daesh. For much of the five-year conflict in Syria, Turkey’s priorities have sadly often be more focused on hindering the efforts of the YPG—PKK alliance rather than those of ISIS, so I hope that this recent development represents an awakening to the supreme threat that ISIS’ jihadism poses to Turkey and the West and a new willingness to collaborate more fully with the US – and now Russian – coordinated coalition to defeat this evil scourge and the threats it poses to the European Union and the western world."@en1
