"Labour MEPs fully support measures to promote greater work-life balance. We will not meet the demographic challenges we face – including the need to care for an ageing population – unless we modernise existing leave arrangements. Fathers taking time out of work to care for children must be supported by the right to paternity leave. We also support greater rights for carers, more extensive maternity leave rights and better implementation of existing legislation. These changes will bring benefits to the economy as a whole, and ensure that women and men are equal earners and carers. I therefore voted in favour of this report which takes a clear stand against austerity and widening social inequalities. It highlights the sad reality that women are especially affected by precarious labour, zero—hours contracts, and cuts in public services. The Commission and national governments must heed the call here, and take action. This is an important example of how the EU promotes gender equality and social justice, and why it is so important that we stand up for it."@en1
