"I supported this report on creating labour market conditions favourable for work-life balance which is Parliament’s response to the Commission’s withdrawal of the Maternity Leave Directive and its replacement following the publication of the Roadmap to address challenges in work/life balance for working families. In a world where the line between work and private life is increasingly blurred it is important workers and their families achieve a satisfactory balance. I fully agree it is crucial to have a lifecycle approach in work-life balance policies to ensure everyone is supported at different moments throughout their life in order to actively participate in the labour market and in society as a whole. That’s why I particularly welcome the call for a Paternity Leave Directive with compulsory two—week paid leave and a Carers’ Leave Directive which supplements the provision of professional care, enables workers to care for dependants and offers the carer adequate remuneration and social protection. This is crucial given that 80% of care needs are provided by informal carers in the EU and 3.3 million Europeans aged between 15 and 34 have had to give up full-time work because they lack care facilities for dependent children or older relatives."@en1
