Mr President, I commend this report’s thorough consideration of the Alpine region, as a marked step towards the achievement of Europe’s goals of territorial cooperation and cohesion. Giving careful consideration to the effects of EU strategies on the environment as well as on economic and social development in these areas, we may build on the recommendations of this report. Thus we are in a position much more effectively to address the challenges experienced by macro regions whilst establishing and improving on the framework within which new and existing strategies will operate.
I particularly support the recognition of the impact of the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP) throughout the EU and not at a regional level alone, as we have observed the increasing development of synergies between different institutions and agencies and, indeed, national and regional policies. While respecting the principle of subsidiarity, I would also hope to observe further improvements in the spheres of biodiversity, transport and tourism from this point forward."@en1
