"I supported this own initiative report on an EU Strategy on Heating and Cooling and was very happy that it got the majority support of the Parliament. The report sets out key proposals for the Commission to reduce the use of energy in buildings. For example, the report highlights the need for greater improvement in efficiency standards and renovation of old homes. It is striking that private and public buildings account for 40% of final energy use and 36% of CO2 emissions in the EU, with a huge 85% of the energy consumption of buildings used for space and water heating alone. I support the rapporteur in their call for further energy renovations which will lead not only to job creation and investment but it will also help to cut CO2 emissions in the EU. We must do much more to renovate existing housing stocks, which often have very low energy efficiency standards. If we are to achieve this, it is important the European Commission presents an ambitious review of energy efficiency legislation in the coming weeks and takes into consideration the proposals made in this report."@en1
