"I supported the resolution ‘Towards a New Energy Market Design’ for a number of reasons. Firstly, in order for Europe to meet its 2030 climate goals, there needs to be a transformation in the way the energy market in Europe operates. This means that we need an improved integrated energy market to achieve a secure, affordable, environmentally-sound energy supply and security. We need to reduce our dependency on oil and gas imports and incentivise development of new technologies, particularly low-carbon generating facilities. This report sets out the best way to achieve a properly functioning EU energy market with market led approaches. That is why I supported the rapporteur’s call to phase-out subsidies for mature renewable technologies and I voted against an amendment which called for continuing financial support from governments to certain renewable technologies at the expense of other possibly more innovative technologies."@en1
