"Madam President, the many threats facing Europe’s bee population, including those of environmental changes and the Varroa parasite, are well known, but it is my duty to address the appalling lack of focus and public attention being given to the spread of the small hive beetle in southern Italy. This parasite has been wreaking havoc on Italian beekeepers for over two years and despite serious eradication efforts similar to the failed attempts in the United States, Canada and Australia, the small hive beetle has now established itself in Italy, and what is more, it is there to stay.
Tonight I call for the immediate ban on the export of all Italian queen bees and the placing of a movement ban on Italian hives. Unless such drastic steps are taken, our honeybees face extinction. British and European beekeepers are calling for this, but, to their despair, no one listens. Action must now be taken or it will be too late."@en1
