"Madam President, I just want to say that obviously I voted with the Group on this, there was no real controversy. But I have noticed in recent times that more and more people when shopping are looking at the label of what they buy. I think that is an educational process, so for that reason I have a slight difficulty with the title here – ‘permitted health claims made on foods’. The word ‘claims’ is not really what we should be looking at. It is either a fact or it is not, and it should not be a claim based on some survey or whatever the food producers are undertaking, and often these claims can be misleading. That is why it is so important that we are discussing this today, especially in relation to young children and indeed their parents who want to give them the best possible food. There are too many claims now that if you take this drink or that drink you are going to be faster and stronger and a great sports person, so they consume more than they should be consuming – and that is another issue, the actual volume. I think we have a lot of work to do, but this is a start and I support it."@en1
