"I voted in favour of this report, which incorporated a number of proposals that I put forward as author of the associated opinion of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE).
The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) was ratified by the EU in 2010, covering a large range of rights for people with disabilities, ranging from the workplace to transport. Accession means the EU is now scrutinised by the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The CPRD Committee published its concluding observations on the initial report of the EU in August 2015, which require the Commission to respond with a report within a year. The purpose of this own-initiative report is to ensure that Parliament’s views are taken into account in the Commission’s response (due in September).
Among other things, the report calls for the EU to ratify the Optional Protocol to the CRPD, welcomes the proposal for a European Accessibility Act and calls for its swift adoption. It calls on the Commission to review the European Disability Strategy and develop a new EU CPRD strategy; and calls for a review of all EU legislation and funding programmes to ensure full compliance and implementation with the CPRD."@en1
