"Mr President, during the campaign in my country for the EU referendum, one issue that was raised was tax evasion. People asked ‘Why do I pay an increasing amount of tax while the multinationals pay very little? It is unfair and it is completely unethical. Why does the European Union not deal with this?’ That is why I welcome the proposals in this report, and my congratulations go to the rapporteurs, Jeppe Kofod and Michael Theurer. I especially support the proposals on the need for a clear list of tax havens and for a legal framework to protect whistle-blowers and prevent tax advisers from setting up tax-avoidance structures. We really have to ask the Commission and the Member States to demonstrate, in the forthcoming legislation, the same level of ambition as Parliament has demonstrated. Personal tax, I know, is a Member State competence, and I support that. However, corporation tax avoidance can be addressed only if we work together. Therefore, the onus is on the EU to address this. The issue was strongly misrepresented by the Leave side, claiming that what we were discussing was personal tax. I think it is really important that we explain what we are doing here and that what we are trying to address is what many Europeans feel very angry about, namely that in one state the multinationals exploit lower taxes, while they make all their money in another state. I really welcome these proposals. I hope they will be implemented as soon as possible."@en1
