"While it includes some constructive language around low-carbon economies, illegal wildlife trade and some mention of the precautionary principle, overall this is a very negative report containing some very regressive provisions.
In particular, it called for the Trade Agreement CETA to be ratified as swiftly as possible for the ‘future interests of EU businesses’. Sinn Féin in Europe has worked tirelessly on highlighting the dangers of these trade agreements.
Moreover, it welcomes the TTIP reading rooms for MEPs as a Commission ‘transparency initiative’, despite the fact that any MEP has to sign a confidentiality agreement before entering the room. It should further be remembered that what’s inside the reading room is just the tip of the iceberg; the most sensitive documents are still hidden from MEPs and even national governments.
The report also celebrates the Commission’s efforts in bringing forward the new Investment Court System, an initiative with the sole purpose of allowing corporations to sue governments for enacting policies in the public interest through the democratic system."@en1
