In particular, the legislation will help to improve our environment and air quality. The engines of hand—held equipment, construction machinery, locomotives and inland waterway vessels are responsible for 15% of nitrous oxide emissions and 5% of particulate-matter emissions. It is important to bring in effective controls on these emissions, as they have significant effects on the quality of air we breathe and, as a result, on our health.
The rapporteur and the Dutch Presidency have done a very good job in relation to this. I also welcome some exemptions, especially for narrow tractors and certain locomotive engines that are only used intermittently.
