"Mr President, last week we voted to urge the United Kingdom to let us know as soon as possible how they might implement and respect the vote of their citizens, but we clearly know now – because events have unfolded – that this may take some time. What I am concerned about is to reassure citizens in my constituency of Midlands North-West, which borders with Northern Ireland, that, until there is change, everything remains the same, although we know that uncertainty causes deep concern.
Community groups, businesses, schools and colleges throughout the region are deeply disturbed by what might result from the United Kingdom’s leaving the European Union. So we must ensure that, in what happens when there is a new Prime Minister, the current arrangements are respected. We will have no borders again between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. We want trade to continue, but we must respect the four freedoms and we want to ensure that the UK continues to understand the importance of the relationship with the Republic of Ireland and build on it."@en1
