"Madam President, the UK is a bit like Belgium was a few years ago. We are doing OK without national leaders. I would like to address Mr Tusk. This is directly to you, Sir. I am not here to gloat but to say that I came into politics to get my country out of the European Union and vote Brexit – and they did. I am the 52%. I believe the victory of national democracy will encourage my friends in other nations to fight for their right to determine their own national interests. And of course we condemn all the attacks on European citizens. They are most welcome and particularly the Polish. At home we have had scaremongering by our own Prime Minister and Chancellor. They deliberately talked our economy down. That caused a little ripple in the financial markets last Friday, but luckily the FTSE has reasserted and corrected itself and the pound is now finding its true level. European businesses will recognise that they need to continue to trade with us. After all, over EUR 288 billion of EU trade is with the UK. Our Commonwealth partners, the US, South Korea and others are queuing up to do free trade deals with us. Don’t be left behind. That is why it is imperative that Mr Juncker and the Commission take no part in this negotiation process, which my group called for last week. I actually put that motion down and my group agreed with it. Jobs and business matter, not political retribution. He has also proved over the past few weeks that he is unable and unfit to lead these negotiations. Therefore I would like you, Mr Tusk, to head up the negotiations, along with the other 27 European Heads of Government: they recognise trade. Let us take this divorce forward. Let us make it amicable and make it mutually beneficial to both my country and the European Union."@en1
