"Mr President, I am sorry to hear that Mr Rutte woke up feeling dreadful on 24 June. I had been campaigning really hard for a long time before that, and I had spent at least the last two days unable to get any sleep at all. I had spent the whole night watching the results come in, drinking local beer and having a fantastic local curry, and I must say, I felt fantastic. But I think that is probably to do with the feeling of freedom. I think it does that for you.
Now is the time to embrace the democratic will of the people. Now is the time to stop with any further ‘project fear’, any talking down of the economy, any more concerns. Now is the time to be bright and positive, to look to the future, to put aside the arguments of the campaigns and to be friends, because Brexit brings hope – not just to the UK, but to all the peoples of Europe. We can have a better future, we can be different, we can have change, and we can show that through the democratic will which was shown in the UK and which, hopefully, will be shown in many countries – even in Mr Rutte’s. It is time to be positive, friendly and optimistic. The future for the UK is golden, but we truly wish the best for our friends in Europe too. There is no reason now for any further antipathy, any more of the unpleasantness that has been seen – in this place particularly, but also in other places. That time is gone. The EU is a failed project. The UK has shown the way to freedom, and I truly hope that all of our friends across Europe get the same chance that we had to embrace freedom and a bright future soon."@en1
