"I voted in favour of the resolution on the competitiveness of the European rail supply industry.
The European rail supply industry (RSI), which encompasses the manufacture of locomotives and rolling stock as well as track, electrification, signalling and telecommunications equipment, employs 400 000 people directly and is responsible for more than 1 million direct and 1.2 million indirect jobs in the EU. I was pleased that the resolution recognised this as well as the fact that the RSI is a key industry in terms of European jobs in R&D, urging that measures be taken to ensure we maintain a technological and innovative advantage in this sector.
I was particularly pleased that it called for European training and for an education strategy bringing together RSI companies, research institutes and the social partners to jointly investigate which skills are needed for a sustainable and innovative RSI so that skills pool will be aligned with growing demand in the sector."@en1
