"Madam President, there are elements today which mirror last night’s debate in so far as the distorting actions of China are concerned. China is not a market economy; to propose giving it market economy status is like something out of Alice in Wonderland.
Indeed the UK rail supply industry contributes over GBP 9 billion a year to the British economy; it employs over 200 000 people. But whereas the UK rail supply industry has taken a market approach, it has had a battering as others have not taken that same approach. It is estimated that just 10% of UK revenue in this sector comes from exports, compared with 20% in France and 50% in Germany. I would also say that we need to develop a more skilled workforce in the UK, where we need to do better in terms of technology, in terms of research and development, as we move towards the future.
Indeed, just 1 in 6 people working in this sector at present have level 4 qualifications in a relevant area. So it is estimated that thousands of highly-skilled jobs are needed, and do you know what? This is something that is a perfect example of why we need proper skilled immigration through a points-based system, as opposed to a free-for-all."@en1
