"I voted in favour of the objection to the placing on the market of a genetically-modified carnation for a number of reasons. Firstly, the resolution calls for a withdrawal of this decision because it exceeds the Commissions implementing powers and does not sufficiently fulfil the objective of health and environment protection. My main concern is that the possible consequences of intentional or accidental intake of GM carnations by humans and animals have not been taken into consideration. With regards to accidental cultivation, I do not see the precautionary principle taken into account sufficiently. According to the EFSA GMO panel, the GM carnation does not show enhanced fitness characteristics except if exposed to the herbicide Sulfonylureas. This herbicide is toxic to animals and can have detrimental impacts on the environment, something I believe should not be allowed on the EU market. In addition, the Commission attempted to change the procedure for authorisation, which would enable Member States to opt out from an EU-approved GMO. I, along with the majority of the Parliament rejected the proposal due to a variety of concerns but mainly the potentially disruptive effects that it might have on the functioning of the internal market."@en1
