"I voted in favour of the Anti-Tax Avoidance Directive because aggressive tax avoidance and tax evasion are central causes of global inequality and social injustice. In the EU alone, such practices cost the tax-payers millions, and mean that schools and hospitals are underfunded. Politicians who have imposed austerity and public sector cuts, condemning the weakest in society to poverty and exclusion, often tell us that their measures are inevitable and technical. And yet we see that austerity, as with the decision of who tax and who not to tax, are political decisions. I am glad to see that the EU is now taking this very important step towards global social justice. The Commission’s original proposals for the Directive were a step in the right direction, in line with OECD position, but Parliament’s report today pushes them to be bolder still. National finance ministers must take the Parliament’s position on board Parliament and agree the most ambitious Directive possible at their meeting on 19 June. The EU must be a world leader in the fight to tackle tax injustice, as it is the only actor that is able to act on this on the international stage."@en1
