"This report had a particularly regressive and unconstructive agenda. Its aim was to increase developing countries dependence on IT multinationals by expanding the Information Technology Products Agreement (ITA)
ITA is a trade agreement which primarily profitable large companies who can now buy and sell these products without any tariffs. ITA signatories often argue that the agreement is very good for developing countries because it will increase their trade and therefore their GDP. In reality, not many developing countries are signatories to the agreement. With every expansion of the agreement it will be harder for them not to join the agreement as the agreement increases their dependency. Moreover, when tariffs are eliminated, developing countries will also lose a significant amount income out of duties that they would normally receive from their exports. Therefore, this is an agreement that will not help developing countries develop; it will only help multinationals trading in technology (related) products.
It was for these reasons that I voted against this report."@en1
