"By way of background information, the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition in Africa (NAFSN) is a huge agricultural public—private partnership which is used in sub—Saharan Africa with the stated aim of improving food security and reducing hunger. In reality however, the NAFSN, whose main private actors are multinationals, underpins and promotes an agricultural model based on monoculture and production of export crops, and has been reported as a risk factor in the facilitation of land grabs and ultimately failing to achieve its objectives.
Small-scale farmers have been side-lined in favour of the will of much larger agribusinesses. This report from a Green rapporteur highlights the problems with this PPP and the need for stronger governance structures which currently are lacking in the implementation of NAFSN as well as the need to support family farms and smallholders as a more sustainable way to achieve food security and elimination of hunger.
Therefore, I voted in favour of this report as it contained some very positive and progressive provisions and proactively worked to implement sustainable solutions."@en1
