"I voted against this report, which contained some very regressive and negative provisions. It is an alarming report which promotes austerity policies in addition to further transfers of sovereignty from National Parliaments to the European Union.
The view of my party Sinn Féin is that the solution to the ongoing economic and financial crisis is not to continue with the same policies that have created this crisis, but a policy that puts the needs of people first and not those of the market. The Single Market Strategy promotes a neo liberal strategy, which endorses austerity policies. The austerity measures being applied by undemocratic means in the EU countries worst hit by the crisis reflect the failure of the EU’s neoliberal architecture. Sinn Féin are working in Europe to urgently reverse this policy and deliver solidarity and job creation within an economic system that serves people not profit.
The single market and competitiveness have been used as arguments to justify attacks on workers’ rights, social inequalities, labour deregulation, wage devaluation and increasingly precarious employment, while fairer, more redistributive tax policies have been obstructed.
Austerity is avoidable; it is a political choice that puts the interests of some above the interests of others."@en1
