"I was happy to support the report pressing for a new deal for energy consumers across the EU, to improve consumer choice, information and transparency, and to increase the EU-wide deployment of ICT, which can reduce energy use and household bills. There should be an implementation of market liberalisation measures to tackle persistently high levels of market concentration, improve low levels of consumer switching, and for retail prices to better reflect falling wholesale costs. Enhanced coordination at EU level to combat energy poverty through the sharing of best practices among Member States and the development of a broad, common but non-quantitative definition of energy poverty is important. This should focus on the idea that access to affordable energy is a basic social right, providing a coherent and cohesive policy for consumers."@en1
