"Madam President, all authorities must be subject to adequate scrutiny. We in Sinn Féin understand, of course, the need for enhanced cooperation between countries, especially when it comes to tackling terrorism, drug dealing and human trafficking.
Now we also believe that all powers must be held to account. The removal of the joint supervisory body – the only genuine oversight group with on-premises access to Europol activity – means new powers will not be adequately monitored. This is deeply unfortunate, particularly as this report aims to mandate Europol with handling substantive amounts of personal data and seeks to empower Europol to determine what online content is legal.
With all power comes responsibility, and accountability breeds responsibility. I think that is something that everyone in this House would agree with."@en1
