"Madam President, the President of Uruguay has said that the reason why we do not want a trade agreement is because we are afraid of competition. Now competition would be fine if it were fair competition. The type of competition they are referring to is one where one of us runs a race with a pile of bricks on our back and the other one gets to run with a fan at their back. They are not, it is not fair. Different standards, which cost us more. Inevitably this is not going to work. But the problem that we have is that it is really hard to believe where the European Union is going with these trade negotiations. It is really hard to believe whether we are being told the truth on what are the red lines. We have now been told by Commissioner Hogan that beef is off the menu. Can the Commissioner tell us definitively whether that is true or not, because it will cost us EUR 500 million in Ireland if it is not? Also, where is the joined—up thinking within the European Union? Where does climate change fit into all of this? And can you also answer this question: who do you represent, Commissioner?"@en1
