"This report calls for a definition for mountain regions, which make up 30% of EU territory, and the creation of a single strategic approach towards these regions. This sustainable, strategic approach is much needed and is a matter which affects certain areas of rural Ireland, especially along the west coast and the northern part of our country. The report calls for steps to be taken to overcome issues of accessibility and a lack of infrastructure and public services, and to create employment and combat depopulation, while also taking into consideration cross-border issues. The challenges caused by youth exodus from these regions are also referred to. The Irish Government has treated rural Ireland shamefully – services have been stripped, our island communities have been attacked, young people have fled in their thousands and the poverty rate in rural Ireland has increased. The neglect of rural Ireland including mountainous regions has starved our communities of investment, funding and services and has contributed to depopulation and isolation. It was for these reasons that I voted in favour."@en1
