"I supported this report on gender equality and empowering women in the digital age. Digitalisation has revolutionised not just European economies but every aspect of our society, from the way we communicate with each other to how we access information, education and the world of work. There are lots of opportunities within this digital revolution but we must ensure that citizens have the right training and skills in order to seize these opportunities. This report specifically addresses the gender aspects of these challenges. There is a severe gender gap within the digital sector, where women only represent 30% of the ICT workforce with the majority of this employment being lower paid and in lower skilled positions. Women remain heavily underrepresented in ICT degrees, where they constitute only approximately 20% of graduates in the field. Education and training of women and girls in ICT and other STEM subjects is therefore crucial to encouraging female engagement in the sector and I welcome the call on the Commission and Member States to promote this. I also welcome the call for targeted investment to foster female entrepreneurship and to make funds available for female entrepreneurs to create ICT-related businesses and digital start-ups."@en1
