"I supported this report on women domestic workers and carers in the EU. I personally submitted 17 amendments to the opinion of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs and was pleased to see many of them were included in the final report. I was particularly pleased to see that the call for professionalisation of the sector in order to foster decent job creation and for all Member States to urgently ratify ILO Convention 189 on Domestic Workers – something I am proud to say my own country Ireland has already done but 22 Member States still have yet to do – was adopted. I was also pleased that my call for a carers’ leave directive was included in the final report, which is something I have advocated for a number of years. This would recognise non-professional or ‘family’ carers who take a break from employment to care for a dependant and would provide a minimum standard of social protection during the time they perform care tasks and training support, etc. Given the demographic challenges facing Europe and the inevitable pressure on our health and social systems it is essential to support those who save Member States in excess of GBP 2.5 billion annually."@en1
