"Whilst it is laudable to look at harmonising the railway system across EU Member States, we in the UK already have probably the safest network in Europe. Standardisation and interoperability can be a good thing, but I get worried when the best standards are compromised to satisfy 28 Member States. Great Britain pioneered railways, and fine examples of British railway engineering can still be seen across the globe. We have some of the best technical standards built for safety over many years, like HS 2, which is another EU project. Interoperability of a rail system will not benefit the UK, so why do we need it? We do not, but as members of the European Union we will have to adopt it anyway, and at great cost to the British taxpayer. A hidden cost, like so many which are never included in their cost of membership – unless we vote to leave on 23 June, then we can do what is right for Britain is instead of what is demanded by the European Union."@en1
