"In the context of the Sustainable Development Goals which were signed at the UN last year, the EU – and moreover the world – has committed itself to an ambitious development agenda for the next fifteen years, with the intention of eliminating poverty and ensuring that no-one gets left behind.
I am very much in support of this report, which echoes this commitment made at the UN, and it highlights the gap between the amount of money that is needed to make this agenda a reality and the amount of money that the public sector is actually able to give in the form of development aid.
Which is why, in lieu of comprehensive public sector involvement, I support the notion that the private sector can and should play a greater role in the development towards bridging the gap between national development aid and the needs of those countries who are still developing. This involvement needs to be extremely well regulated, to avoid misuse of money, and it needs to ensure that poverty reduction is the main goal of private companies when they are involved in development projects across the world."@en1
