"Voting to make my constituents safer from terrorist and criminal threats is something which must be the highest duty of any politician for his or her constituents. The EU Passenger Name Record (PNR) Directive will ensure the processing and sharing of airline passenger name records between EU Member States. This will help identify passengers who are suspected terrorists on flights which originate from outside of the EU, before any damage can be done. Earlier attempts to win agreement foundered on proper questions about respect for civil liberties and privacy of data, but which I believe have now been properly answered by building necessary judicial safeguards into the agreement. I strongly believe national governments must also get serious about funding Europe-wide anti-terrorism bodies, and make better use of European instruments for sharing vehicle registration details, finger printing and DNA data. Our access as a member of the EU to these measures, now including PNR, highlights the necessity of Britain remaining within the EU. I am proud to have given this report my support."@en1
