"Madam President, today this institution has an opportunity to give with one hand and take with the other. While the mind boggles at the invasive and unnecessary PNR proposal, we in Sinn Féin welcome the introduction of a more robust data protection initiative, such as the good report authored by Mr Albrecht. The right to the protection of personal data is enshrined in the European Convention of Human Rights and the European Charter of Fundamental Rights, and they seek to protect the individual’s right to privacy, for instance protecting private medical records and preventing insurance companies from potentially misusing personally and very deeply- held private information. The Data Protection Regulation, while not perfect, is a step in the right direction, and the European institutions should build on this platform and concern themselves more with the protection of the civil liberties of citizens rather than on what meals they order on a flight."@en1
