"Central Asia is vital for UK economic and security interests. I consequently support efforts to improve the economic, political and security situation in the region, which is becoming more complex and fragile due to the increasing conflict of interest between Russia and the EU, as well as the threat from extremist groups.
In line with the UK Government’s commitment to defending human rights objectives globally, this report also placed significant emphasis on the need to improve the lives of women. While in some Central Asian states, steps are being taken to fully implement the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the situation of women in this region has nevertheless been described by the UN as prolific and pervasive. Indeed, one third of girls report domestic violence as part of their lives and in rural areas, women remain in a state of severe disadvantage and poverty. Calling on these states to address such issue is therefore a crucial step in ensuring the lives of women are improved.
It is for these reasons that I voted in favour."@en1
