"Mr President, on the release of the Panama Papers, we have once again seen the usual outcry from politicians saying the rich are not paying their fair share of tax – like Mr Moscovici here in his speech before us today: he wants to make the rich pay their fair share. Well, Mr Moscovici, you are one of those rich: you earn over EUR 20 000 a month; you have a residence allowance of EUR 3 000 a month; a EUR 600-a-month expense allowance; a pension people would only dream of – EUR 300 000 a year. You said tax transparency should apply to everyone. Therefore I say to you: will you agree that you and all your other Commissioners should put your tax accounts online so that the public can see the tax transparency of the Commissioners? You also said that you want to crack down on tax havens. Well, I agree with you. So, therefore, will you crack down on Europe’s biggest tax haven – that of Brussels? Whilst the people of Belgium and across Europe pay tax rates of 30, 40 or 50% you, EU Commissioners, civil servants and EU staff can pay as little as 8%. Whilst we have youth unemployment across many countries of 30 and 40% or even more, you are enjoying the luxury of high salaries and low taxation. And will the EU MEPs pay themselves at the same levels of tax as in their own countries? The biggest scandal of all is that whilst the people pay their tax, the Eurocrats pay virtually nothing. There is the scandal."@en1
