"As a Labour Euro MP, I fully support the provisions for a greater role for national parliaments in EU decision-making. I have always seen the European Parliament as a democratic partner to our national parliamentary colleagues. It is our job to hold the European Commission and the presidency of the European Council to account, the role of national parliaments to hold to account positions proposed and taken by national governments in the Council of Ministers. If we both do our jobs – and collaborate together in doing so – there is better democratic scrutiny for the European Union as a whole. The proposal for an enhanced ‘warning card’ system for national parliaments to have greater opportunity for national parliaments to intervene earlier on pending EU legislation where there is a concern about subsidiarity, was first proposed by the British Labour Party and only subsequently adopted by our Conservative colleagues. All of us who say Europe needs reform but that Britain is better off in a reformed European Union, should support these proposals. The benefit in the end is for our citizens, increasing democracy and ensuring that legislation is adopted at the level which is closest to the people."@en1
