"In an attempt to find consensus, the co-rapporteurs produced a report that not only lacked any real ambition, but was also without clear proposals on how to tackle the migrant crisis. The priorities of the UK conservative delegation, as well as the ECR Group more broadly, were also not properly considered and as a result, were left out of the final version of the text. Instead of focusing on issues such as enhancing border controls, combatting human trafficking and resettlement, the report emphasised the importance of a compulsory EU wide system and measures that would directly interfere with national immigration policy. The report’s policy recommendations did not therefore offer a sensible or sustainable solution to the current crisis Europe is facing. I firmly believe that Member States are best placed to set their own national immigration policy and that offering relocation and resettlement of refugees should be done on a voluntary basis. Opting in to EU legislation in this area should only occur when there is clear added value to the UK’s immigration system and the British people. On this occasion, I do not believe this was the case. It is for these reasons that I voted against."@en1
