The conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity under the auspices of international law is a common concern for all mankind and essential to ensure that our dependence on the ocean does not become too burdensome. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) provides for a mechanism whereby all actors with an interest in the development of the ocean’s resources are held accountable for their actions in relation to the sea. I feel that this reflects the attitude of the EU which should continue to play a leading role in the development of this new instrument and in the implementation process."@en1
