"The VAT Directive has played an important role in stimulating the EU’s Single Market since it was first introduced in 1993. Unfortunately however, the latest proposal from the Commission was published too late to allow for sufficient consultation.
This report is therefore very much welcomed and has my full support. By confirming the agreement to prolong the application of the existing VAT regime, this report allows enough time to consider the new VAT regime as well as the additional flexibilities that have been proposed alongside it.
Initially, there were concerns over the continuation of the current 5% VAT applied to sanitary products. This matter however was resolved during the March Council meeting following the Commission’s proposal to allow greater flexibility for Member States by extending the number of zero rate VAT products, which includes sanitary products.
It is for these reasons that I voted in favour."@en1
