"Mr President, we have a dilemma here, unfortunately. The long-term prospects, as outlined by the Commissioner, seem to be quite good, with a growing population meaning greater demand for food. Also, of course, the Commissioner is trying to open up new markets, which is highly commendable.
But for farmers there is a small element of ‘live, horse and you’ll get grass’ about this, because a short-term crisis could put a lot of them out of business. So that is why we have to try and come up with short-term solutions. I know the Commission has done an awful lot (EUR 500 million last year, etc.), but is there room for more in the short term? The situation, especially in my country, has been exacerbated by horribly bad weather and the threat of Brexit, so they need help now.
Is there an opportunity, for instance, to have a short-term intervention for three or four months and then revert to the status quo? I think we need to look at short-term measures to get the farmers over the crisis right now."@en1
