"I was happy to support the progress report for 2015 on Montenegro. I welcome the steps forward made by the country however I do note that there are still problems to be solved in different sectors which need to be overcome. Although Montenegro is the most advanced Western Balkans country on its way to European Union membership, there is much still to be done within the country to ensure that democratic principles are promoted and guaranteed. The judiciary, freedom of media, the fight against corruption, weak civil society, are all still topics of concern. The highly polarised political scene is a challenge for both the government and the opposition. Transparent, free and fair next parliamentary elections are crucial for the future democratic development of the country. Thankfully, all of these concerns were strongly outlined within the resolution and sends a clear message that any accession of Montenegro into the EU must be based on the liberal democratic principles."@en1
